My Winter Song

By Elton Wildermuth, 1985

My winter song is a song for no reason
nor rhyme: winter season descends on the earth.
Cold winter, long beyond pain, beyond pleasure,
in time she will measure the days of my birth.
The winter comes in a sigh;
the winter leaves when she pleases --
freezes the sky and hides the ground.
World without sound: no bird sings here;
nothing survived this year.
My winter song: this is my winter song.
My winter song: this is my only song.
Winter arrives without any warning;
she comes in the morning to greet me as I rise.
Icicle knives and the frost feathers gleaming,
a cold winter dreaming of sleep behind my eyes.
She sings a song without words:
the breath of my winter lover
covers the birds with comfort cold.
Wintertime, old with memory:
winter abides in me.
My winter song: this is my winter song.
My winter song: this is my only song.
